Women's Equality Day - August 26
August 26 of each year is designated in the United States as Women's Equality Day. Instituted by Rep. Bella Abzug and first established in 1971, the date commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights in 1920. Secularism, Women & The State: The Mediterranean World in the 21st Century.
The papers in this volume emerged from a conference on “The Prospects for the Secular State in the Mediterranean World” held in June 2008 at Trinity College’s Rome Campus. One of the outcomes from the diverse group of scholars’ discussions was a consensus that gender relations and the status of women were key variables for understanding the prospects for secularism and secularity in all the Mediterranean countries. The book’s contributors, most of whom are women scholars resident in the region, offer invaluable insight into the challenges and trends relating to women and society in various Mediterranean states – Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Spain and Turkey.
